Abstract
591,004. Locomotive gear casings. SCHWEIZERISCHE LOKOMOTIVUND MASCHINENFABRIK. Jan. 17, 1945, No. 1445. Convention date, Dec. 18, 1943. [Class 79 (iii)] In a single axle drive steam locomotive having reduction gear 10, 12 disposed between the side members 20 of the main frame and multicylinder steam engines disposed outside such members, the engine crank cases 3 are secured to the reduction gear casing 7 and the pinion shaft 8 is mounted in bearings 6 at its ends only, where it is firmly coupled to the crankshaft 1. The pinion shaft 8 is preferably hollow and of large diameter is made in two halves bolted together at 11. The coupling 4, 5 between the crankshaft and pinion shaft may be located outside the frame member 20 as shown, for a two throw crankshaft, or inside the frame member if a three throw crankshaft is employed; The innermost crank arm 4 of each crankshaft forms part of the coupling and the outer end of each crankshaft is journalled at 2. Inertia weights 19 may be added to the web 18 of the crankshaft. The pinion 10 drives a gear 12 whose shaft carries a second pinion (not shown) which drives the large axle gear 14 mounted at 16 in the gear casing 7.
