Abstract
836,347. Torsional vibration dampers. GENERAL MOTORS CORPORATION. Aug. 20. 1958 [Sept. 19, 1957], No. 26775/58. Class 108(3) The invention comprises the combination with a reciprocatory engine 10, Fig. 1, having a rotary crankshaft which at low engine speeds is subject to an oscillatory torque and vibrates as a relatively rigid non-resonant structure, of a relatively torsionally resilient drive shaft 14, connected at one end to the crankshaft and at the other to a damper mass 16. The drive shaft 14 has a torsional spring rate and the damper mass 16 has a moment of inertia so as to act as a tuned dynamic torsional vibration absorber at low engine speeds, the damper mass being subject to viscous damping to reduce vibrations at resonance. The damped mass 16 is an impeller of a fluid coupling in a transmission 18. A turbine 20 of the coupling is connected to drive other elements of the transmission which are connected to drive rear axles 24 through a differential 22. Alternatively, a torque converter having an impeller 26, Fig. 2, a turbine 28 and a stator 30, may be used. In this arrangement, universal joints 32, 34, are provided at the ends of the propeller shaft 14. The Specification includes formulae for calculating correct values of spring rate and inertia to ensure that the combination will act as stated.
