Abstract

Firebridges; grates; air, supplying. - A secondary grate 12 is arranged between the main grate 10 and a firebridge 22 provided with a forwardly-projecting ledge 27 which serves to intercept ash or dust and cause it to fall through openings 28 in the bridge plate 21 to a space 23 beneath the grate. The secondary grate is normally kept free from fuel but the live fuel can be pushed back on to this grate while clinkers &c. are being removed from the main grate. The main grate 10 is supplied with air through a tapering trough 29 by a steam jet 34 and the space 23 beneath the secondary grate is shut off from the ash-pit and provided with an independent air supply through pipes 35 which extend to near the back end of the space 23, the air being induced by steam jets 36. The secondary grate comprises channel members 13 of triangular cross-section spaced apart by ribs 15 which are inclined upwardly towards the front of the grate to provide sloping air passages 31 so that the secondary air is directed backwardly against the flow of the gases from the main grate causing intimate mixture. The channel members 13 are filled with fire-brick 17 and are supported between the bearer 19 and a flange 32 on the bridge plate 21. Specification 272,054 is referred to.
