Abstract

255,610. Harvey, L. C. June 22, 1925. Pulverulent-fuel furnaces.-A chamber a open at the rear to the boiler &c. to be fired is provided with substantially vertical burners k arranged in the roof in one or more rows parallel with the sides of the chamber for delivering pulverized fuel and insufficient air and openings such as d in the side walls for air for completing combustion. If combustion is to be completed in the chamber a a horizontal burner or burners l in the front wall is also used. The air ports, d are supplied from an air-jacket e which also supplies secondary air at n and o at the outlet of the chamber, all with damper control. The means for controlling the supply of fuel includes rotary deflector valves s, Figs. 2 and 5, designed to allow the heavier particles to pass straight through to the burner k nearest the chamber outlet and deflect the lighter particles to the other burners. Slopes i, j and x are provided for the collection and removal of ash and slag and a steam, water or air pipe at 3 for the cooling and breaking up of the slag &c. and conversion of unconsumed carbon into water gas. The ashpit front carrying with it the inspection door w<1> and slope j is completely removable.
