Abstract

299,727. Klinger, J. R. Oct. 27, 1927, [Convention date]. Lubricating.-The skin friction or resistance to propulsion of ships is reduced by providing in front of the bow tubular or hollow plate like bodies to which compressed air or gas is supplied from the ship and from which it is blown out through small openings so that the water which comes into contact with the hull is permeated with air. or gas. In one form, the tube c, Fig. 1, through which the gas is supplied terminates in a number of U- or V-shaped members the arms a of which may be vertical or raked backwards or forwards. Arrangements are also made whereby the pressure of the gases delivered varies with the depth of immersion of the nozzle from which it emerges. Various crosssections of pipes are described as well as internal arrangements of diaphragms which allow the desired variations of pressure. Where hollow plates are employed, the tubes u, Fig. 21, for the compressed air may be carried through the connecting member s. The horizontal plate j which terminates in a pointed end furnished with nozzles h may be associated with spaced vertical hollow side plates the forward edges of which are likewise pointed.
