710,596. Reducing the resistance of ships. THOMAS, M. A. E. May 16, 1952 [June 1, 1951], No. 12494/52. Class 113(1) In an apparatus for reducing the friction of water on the hull of a ship comprising a plurality of substantially vertical pipes 3 spaced from one another on either side of the ship's hull and along a length thereof varying between one-third and onehalf of the length of the ship measured from the stem, each of the pipes being provided with a plurality of vertically-spaced apertures positioned below the water-line of the hull for the discharge of air, a shield 4 or 2 associated with each pipe extends the length thereof and has its forward edge secured to the hull in front of the pipe, the shield extending rearwardly and outwardly from the hull to the rear of the pipe, and means comprising a compressor 6, pipes 9, a pressure regulator 8, pipes 7 and valves 10 are provided for supplying ait under pressure to the pipes 3 for discharge through the said apertures in the pipes.
