Abstract
500,739. Reducing resistance to motion. BOERNER, A. Aug. 20, 1937, No. 22913. [Classes 4 and 113 (i)] The resistance to motion of a ship or aircraft is reduced by taking-in some of the surrounding fluid at the forepart of the vessel, and exhausting it rearwardly at a more rearward section at reduced velocity. The fluid is admitted at the inlet 4 and exhausts at orifices 10, its velocity being reduced by a rotary valve 6, by control flaps, or by shaping the conduit 5. The controls may be generated selectively to assist in steering the vessel. The exhausted fluid passes over roughened plating secured to the hull. In a modification the conduits are secured externally to the hull of an existing vessel.
