Abstract

287,510. Experimental Engineering Co., (Assignees of Jacobs, J., and Akimoff, N. W.). March 23, 1927, [Covention date]. Propelling, steering, and manoeuvring by fluid jets.-In jet propulsion apparatus for ships, a fluid under pressure is discharged into a passage open to the surrounding water at its smaller cross-section. The passage has a smaller outlet than inlet. and when external to the vessel has thin edges. A number of such units may be aggregated into a large unit. The apparatus may be adjustable for steering. An engine 2, Fig. 1, drives a pump 3 which forces water down the adjustable conduit 7 on the top of which is a steering lever 8. The pressure water passes to a cylinder 12, Fig. 8, having internal open cones 13, 17 and issues axially at the ports 20 in the constricted part 15 to entrain liquid in the cones. The inlet is larger than the outlet 16 and at botli ends the edges are sharp. Instead of rotating the tube 12 and conduit 7 for steering, the tube 12 may be jointed at 24 to a fixed conduit and has a block 25 that is attached to a steering suspension rod 27. Instead of liquid, air or gas may be employed, such as the exhaust of an internal combustion engine and the tube may be placed inside the boat with the inlet at the bottom and outlet at the stern. A number of units may be disposed at suitable places beneath or within the hull. Alternatively a number of units may be nested within a drum 31, Figs. 9, 10 carrying a front coned header plate 32 and flat rear plate. Pressure fluid is admitted at 34 and passes as jets 36 to entrain the surrounding fluid. This form is suitable for mounting on aircraft.
