Abstract
298,420. Barnard, S. B., and Gaunt, R. Jan. 21, 1928. Variable-speed gearing comprises means for facilitating the engagement of revolving toothed wheels. Gear 6 is to be slid into mesh with gear 1, which is fast on law shaft 8. A gear 4 of the same size as gear 1 is loose on shaft 8 and coupled so as to slide with gear 6 while remaining in mesh. When the pair 6, 4 is moved towards gear 1, a dog 5 on gear 4 enters an arcuate slot 2, Figs. 1 and 3, in the face of the gear 1. When the dog 5 stops at end of recess 2, the teeth of revolving gears 1, 6 are in position to mesh. Continued movement of the pair 6, 4 is permitted by the dog 5 passing through a circular hole 3 in the gear 1. In a modification shown in Fig. 4, the slot 2 is replaced by a dog 11. When the dogs 5, 11 are in contact, continued movement of the pair 6, 4 enmeshes the pair 6, 1 without shock, the dogs 5, 11 passing into registering holes 3 in the juxtaposed gears.
