Breech actions, drop - down barrel; firing appliances; safety appliances. - Relates to signal pistols such as those used for firing " Very " lights and comprising a drop-down barrel adapted to be locked by a stirrup j, and consists of the provision of a safety member i for locking the firing hammer g unless the barrel is locked by the stirrup j. As shown, the firing hammer g slides in a part d between the barrel and the handle, and is provided with a cocking head g<2> and with half-cock and full-cook bents g<3>, g<4> for engagement by the sear h<1> in one with the trigger h. The safety member i is a bolt passing at the side of the hammer and normally urged obliquely upwards by a spring i<1>, which presses the bolt against a lug j' on the stirrup to hold the same in the locking position. In that position, a notch in the bolt i allows free movement to the hammer g ; but if the bolt i is depressed by an unlocking movement of the stirrup j, the bolt locks the hammer in safety. In a modification, the safety bolt passes through a slot in the hammer.
