BARREL-LOCK FOR FIREARMS.

To all whom it may concern:

Be itknown-that I, ELBERT STURGILL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Eolia, in the county of Letcher, State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel-Locks for Firearms; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to locks for the barrels of firearms; and it has for its object to provide a construction which will be cheap and eflicient and which will hold the barrel securely in place, while being easily and quickly operated to release the barrel.

A further object of the invention is to provide a construction of lock for pistols wherein the releasing-button will be in position for operation by the thumb of the right hand, in which the pistol is held when fired, so that the barrel may be unlocked or released with speed. Other objects and advantages of the invention will be understood from the following description.

In the drawings forming a portion of this and in whichlike numerals of Figure 1 is a side elevation of a pistol embodying the present invention, the position of the thumb of the operator being indicated in dotted lines. .Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section through the rear end portion of the barrel and the adjacent portion of the stock and illustrating the arrangement of the lock mechanism. 4

Referring now to the. drawings, there is shown" a pistol comprising a stock 5, in which is pivoted a barrel 6 through the medium of a pin 7 passed through the sides of the recess 8, in which the barrel is received, and through the depending ears 9 upon the barrel. In the side of the stock of the pistol is a slot 17, through which is passed the stem of a button 18, disposed at the left hand side of the pistol and in position the thumb of the hand of the operator.

After the pistol has been fired the button is drawn slightly rearwardly and downwardly to swing the hook out of engagement with the recess of the depending lug of the barrel,

a depending lug at the rear end of the barrel having a notch in its rear face a latch pivoted at its lower end at the bottom of the recess, and having a forwardly-directed hook at its upper end of the barrel-lug, said latch projecting at its lower end forwardly from its pivot, a button having a stem passed inwardly through the opening in the side of the stock and engaged transversely of the recess at its forward end and adjacent to the bottom, and a'leaf-spring removably disposed between the pin and the bottom of the recess and resting with its rear end upon the forward projection of the lower 9 5 end of the'latch.
