Fastenings for boxes.-In a box or container having one or more horizontally-hinged lid members opening upwards and held in the closed position by a member fixed to the upper end of a vertically-disposed member passing through the lid, the vertically-disposed member 7 is wholly guided upwards by guide means 6 secured to the bottom of the box within it. As shown the lid consists of two quadrilateral members 1, 2 hinged to two sides of the box and cut away at their adjacent inner edges 3, 4 to form, when the members are in the closed position, a square aperture at the centre of the lid. The verticallydisposed member 7 which is slidably mounted in a socket 6 secured to the bottom of the box, passes through the square aperture and carries an enlarged head 10 which engages the lid members and holds them closed when the member 7 is pushed down into its socket; pins on the member 7 engage slots in the socket to limit its outward movement. Tabs may be secured to the adjacent edges of the lid members for opening them when the member 7 is raised or one or more springs 12 may be fixed to the member 7 to open the lid members as the member 7 is raised; springs may also be fitted to the sides of the box to assist in raising the lid members. The member 7 may be held in its retracted position against the action of a spring which automatically raises it when the member is turned to bring the pins or projections, by which it is guided in the socket, into line with the slots in the latter; the member 7 carries projections which engage under the lid members to raise them as the member is forced outward by its spring. The lid may consist of four triangular members each hinged to a side of the box or may be a single rectangular or square element hinged to one side thereof.
