Be it known that I, LOUIS W. DRAPER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in paper boxes and has for its object the pro* duction of a box which will be so constructed that access to the interior thereof may be readily effected without necessitating the removal of the cover thereof.

A further object of my invention is the provision of a box of the character mentioned which will be of strong and durable construction and eiicient in operation.

Gther objects will appear hereinafter. W'ith these objects in view my invention consists in a box characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and more particularly pointed out in the appended claim.

My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,

Figure 1 is a plan view of the blank from which the body -of a box embodying the preferred form of my invention may be formed, Fig. 2 is a plan view of the blank from which the cover for said body may be formed, Fig. 3 is a bott-om plan view of the cover in completed condition, Fig. 4 is a central vertical section of the preferred form of my box, one side thereof being shown extended to permit of access to the interior thereof, and Fig. 5 is a similar section of a slightly modilied form of my box.

Referring now to the drawing, 1 indicates the blank from which is formed the body of my box. Said blank is creased at 2 to form the central bottom portion 3, the front and rear portions 4 and 4 respectively, and the side portions 5 and 5. The ends of the walls 4 and 4 are extended as shown and creased at 6 to form flaps or ears 7-7 and 8 8 respectively.

rThe cover-forming blank 9 is creased at 10 to form a central top portion 11 and flange portions 12, the ends of two of the lat-ter at opposite sides of the port-ion 11 being provided with flaps or ears 18 which are adapted to be rigidly secured as by rivets 14 to the adjacent ends of the other portions 12 to maintain said portions 12 in rigid relation with the body portion 11, as shown in Fig. 4. Then in operative or folded condition the portions 4*-4 and 5-5 of the body are held in position by means of the flange portions 12 of the cover, said flange snugly engaging over the upper ends of the former. However, said flange, it will be observed, serves only to hold said walls of said body against Outward 1novement. Inward movement of the walls 4 and 4 is prevented by the inner edges 15 of the flaps 7 7 and 8-8 which rest against the bottom of said body; inward movement of the walls 5 and 5 being prevented by the extremities of t-he walls 4 and 4 against which the ends of said walls 5 and 5 abut.

The outer corner portions of the liaps 7-7 are cut away as at 16 in order to permit of the outward rocking of the wall 4 when the front edge lof the cover is elevated sufliciently to release the same, as shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4. Said flaps, as seen, are so formed as to permit of the lowering of the cover to initial or closing position when the wall 4 is in open condition, said flaps, as seen, aording clearance for the flange of the cover when the latter is lowered. Thus it will be seen that access may be gained to the interior of the box without necessitating the removal of the cover. The end 4 may be also readily closed without previously raising the cover as the edges of the flaps 7 serve as cams to automatically raise the cover as the end is pushed inwardly.

In the modified form the front flange portion of t-he cover or that positioned adj acent the wall 4 of the body of the box is loose or free for outward swinging, the flaps 13 thereof not being secured to the contiguous ends of the adjacent flange portions. With this provision, in order to permit of outward swinging of the body wall so that access to the interior of the box may be gained, it will be unnecessary to even elevate the front edge portion of the cover, as in the case above described, it requiring, in this form, only the outward swinging of the front portion of the flange of the cover, as clearly shown in Fig. 5, to permit of such operation. When the box is in closed condition the flaps 13 of the front flange portion of the cover and the side flanges of the front portion of the box are insert-ed into the box at each side to retain the parts in los position as shown. If such clamping of the flaps 13 is not suiiicient to hold the wall 4 closed as mentioned, a locking device of suitable design may be employed to secure the same in position.

A box of the construction as shown and described is particularly adapted for use in many instances, but more especially in places Where it is desired or necessary to pile a number of boxes containing goods one above the other, and where the goods contained therein are frequently removed therefrom and replaced therein. By the employment of boxes of my construction in such places a great saving of time and labor would evidently result.

While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable forms of my box I do not wish to -be limited thereto as there might be various changes made in t-he details of construction and arrangement of parts described Without departing from the spirit of the invention comprehended Within the scope of the appended claim.

Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

A box comprising a body having a bottom, sides integral with said bottom, and front and rear portions integral with said bottom and having side iiaps loosely iitting within said sides, and a cover having depending iianges engaging the front, back and sides of said box to hold the same in box form, the outer corner port-ions of the iaps on said front being cut away on curved lines to facilitate swinging the iaps into and out of said box, to permit the end to be in opened position while thc cover is in place and to automatically raise the cover as said front end is pushed inwardly, substantially as described.
