Abstract

166,810. Rainsford, C. F. July 5, 1920. Corner joints; folding crates and cases. - The sides and ends of a collapsable crate or case are attached'by hinges to a frame or tray comprising. a bottom E, Fig. 3, surrounded by four low end and side pieces J, K, F, &c. The ends C, Dare hinged adjacent to the end pieces, being respectively directly hinged to the bottom and to a narrow spacing-strip, shown in Fig. 5. The sides A, B are hinged respectively to the part F and to a, similar slightly higher part (not shown) on the opposite side of the box. All the hinges employed comprise complementary sheet-metal members O, N, Fig. 5, having wings arranged flush with or capable of being embedded in, parts of the case &c., the tubular members being wrapped round wooden or other pins P, and having an outside diameter equal to the thickness of the material of the parts. The edges of the sides A, B and ends C, D have channel-shaped metal edgings R, Q formed respectively with U-shaped eyes or projections adapted to take into corresponding narrow slots, by means of which parts they are held in engagement when the case is set up, by sliding rods S which pass down through the parts. The upper inside edges of the sides and ends are formed to provide a recessed seating for the depending central part of the lid L, which has also an external flanged metal edging M to fit outside the tops of the sides &c. Hinged stepped tongues T on the lid are adapted to take into sockets V on the sides, both parts being perforated with holes so that a wire &c. can be passed through and sealed over with lead, wax, &c. When the crate is collapsed, the lid fits over the folded side B and the tongues T take into recesses Y in the lower side pieces.
