Folding boxes; corner joints; lids. - Collapsible crates or boxes &c. have the sides, ends, top, and bottom each provided at two opposite ends with flanges such as F, Fig. 1, or with grooved or channel-shaped pieces either formed integral with the sides &c. or permanently secured thereto, the flanges &c. being adapted to engage over or the grooved pieces to engage the edges of, adjacent parts of the assembled box to maintain the latter in the set-up position. The flanges when of metal may have stamped-up prongs to assist in securing them in position, and in the case of a metal box the flangea &c. may be formed by pressing and the box edges beaded, the latter affording a means of holding the box set-up during filling. The hinged flanges for securing the lid (mentioned below) may in this form of box be of wire. To enable the lid to be put in its place one or both of the flanges or sides of the grooved pieces on the adjacent parts may be, as shown, made to hinge, or may be made in two parts one part being detachable and sliding into the other fixed part, or again, the flanges &c. may be fixed and the lid may be made in two portions e<1>, E, Fig. 11, to effect the said purpose. The sides, ends, and bottom are temporarily held together during the filling of the box by providing in the flanges keyhole slots adapted to take over projections on the adjacent parts. The edges of boxes made from ply-wood may be protected hy flanges such as f<2>, Fig. 18. The spaces at the box corners may be filled in by blocks of indiarubber &c.
