JOHN L. HOOD, OF PAWTITCKEfI,-RHODE ISLAND.
BOX.
Application filed March 20, 1924. Serial No. 700,512.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN L. HOOD, a zen of the United States, residing at Paw tucket, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new and useful Improvements in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in boxes. and the primary object thereof is to provide a box for shipping and other purposes, which is'very strong, having the top,'bottom and sides securely affixed to the ends, and which can also be made of comparatively light or thin pieces of lumber without sacrificing strength.
A further object of the invention is to provide a box of this character which can be easily and quickly assembled and in an economical manner. I
The invention has still further and other objects, which will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description. t
In the drawings:
Figure 1, is a perspective of the assembled box ready for shipment.
Figure 2, is a section on nre 1,
Figure 3, is a section on line 3-3 of Figure 1,
Figure 4, is a fragmentary detail perspective view of the top or bottom.
Figure 5, is a similar view of one of the sides; 7
Figure 6, is a detail perspective view of the metal band;
Figure 7 is an end elevation of the box' illustrating a modified form of two-piece metal band.
In proceeding in accordance with the pres ent invention, similar top and bottom members 1 and 2 are employed, the corners of which are provided with cut-outs'3 so as to cause the ends to be of reduced width. The sides 4 are fastened as by nails or screws to the bottom 2 and are provided with grooves 5, which as shown in Figure 5, of the drawings, extend across the end edges thereof.
A metal strap which may be of one-piece, as shown in Figure 6 of the drawings is then placed in position and has its sides 6 inserted in the respective grooves 5, the bottom 7 engaged with the box bottom 2 and its ends 8 disposed above the upper edges of the sides. The ends 9 with cleats 10 secured citi line 2-2 of Figthereto are then placed in position, the ends ,9 being engaged by and between the sides 4 and seating on the ends of the bottom The cleats engage the outer edges of thesides 4 and are nailed or screwedthereto, the
cleats further extending over the sides 6 of I the metal straps,
holding the latter in position.
The bottom 7; of the metal strip, as shown in Figure 2, is nailed to the box bottom 2. V
In operationthe sides 6 of the met-a-l strip are first successively drawn taut and'nailed in position, the nails as shown in Figure 3 being driven through. the box [sides 4,
through the strip sides 6 and into the box end 9. nailed 'in' place. The cover after filling or packing of the box isfplaced in position and the ends'8 of the strap drawn tightly thereover and nailed in overlapping 'position,'as depicted in Figures 1 and 2 of the drawings, the nails passing through the strap ends through the cover and'into the box ends 9.
From the foregoing it will be seen that The bottomf7 of the strip is then the bends or corners of the metal strip or strap are disposed in the cut-outs 3 and serve to bind the top and bottom against the cleats of the ends of the box and in addition bind the sides 4 of the box against the ends 9. The sides 6 of the metal strap are housed by the ends of the box sides so that only the top and bottom portions of the strap are exposed. r
' In Figure 7 of the drawings, a modified form of strap is depicted, same being composed oftwo similar U-shaped members 11 and 12 the lower ends 13 of which overlap and are nailed to each other and to the box bottom, while the upper ends 14 similarly overlap and are nailed to the box cover 1.
7 Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:'
1. In a box, a bottom and a top each having cut-outs in the corners thereof, sides secured to the top and bottom and having grooves extending across the 'end edges thereof, ends engaged between the sides and top and bottom, metal straps having sides arranged in the grooves and top and bottom parts engaged about the box top and bottom and disposed in the cut-outs and nailed to the sides, top and bottom, and cleats at the box ends engaged with the box top and bottom and extending over the adjacent parts of the grooves and sides of the straps.
2. In abox, a bottom and a top each having cut-outs in the corners thereof, sides secured to the top and bottom and having grooves extending across the end edges theoref, ends engaged between the sides and top and bottom, unitary metal straps having sides arranged in the grooves and top and bottom parts engaged about the outer face of the box top and bottom and disposed in the cut-outs and nailed to the box sides, top and bottom.
3. In a'box, a bottom, a top,'sides having grooves extending across the end edges thereof, ends, metal straps having parts in the grooves and other parts extending across the top and bottom and fastened thereto, and cleats on the ends extending across the adjacent parts of the grooves and the straps therein and engaged with the top and bottom.
4. In a box, a bottom, a top, sides and ends, the end edges of the sites having grooves, a one-piece metal strap extending across the bottom and having sides embedded and secured in said groove and having its end parts extending across the top and fastened thereto and in overlapping relation,
and cleats carried by the ends and extending across the grooves and over the adjacent parts of the said sides of the strap in the grooves.
5. In a box, a bottom and a top each hav- "ing cut-outs in the corners thereof, sides secured to the top and bottom and having grooves in the end edges thereof, the said grooves at the companion ends of the sides facing in the same direction, ends secured between the sides and top and bottom and onepiece metal straps havingsides arranged in the grooves and having bottoms engaging the under face of the box bottom and having their ends secured to'the upper face of the box top in overlapped relation.
6. in a box, a bottom and a top, sides hav ing grooved end edges, one-piece metal straps engaged over the bottom andhaving sides disposed in the grooves and having their ends secured to the top, and ends having parts Which extend across the grooves of the sides and across'the'sides er the straps to hold said strap sides in the grooves.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto signed my name JOHN L. HOOD.
