Knock - down boxes etc.; corner joints; lids and covers.-A knockdown box or packing- case made of separable parts has its ends d, d<1>, Fig. 1, provided with metal hooks h engaging in eyes on battens f, f<1> secured to the sides c, c'. The bottom a rests on battens fixed to the inside lower portions of the sides, and it has cutout corners and also battens k fitting against the battens f, f<1>. The lid b has battens l, m, which provide spacing or grooving to receive the battens f, f<1> and the ends d, d'. The fastening means may be other than those described. The lid may be secured by bolts, screws, nails, &c., or by two wires passing right round the box with their ends twisted together and pressed into the recess under the bottom; or short strips of cast-iron may be nailed to the lid and sides. The knocked-down parts may be packed together as shown in Fig. 4, and may be secured by the wires or metal strips. The lid and the ends may have additional battens for strengthening purposes, and the various parts of the box may be standardized. In a modification, the sides p, Fig. 5, have battens p<1>, q<1> providing the equivalents of grooves at p<3>, which receive the side edges of the bottom member; the corner spaces are occupied by the ends of battens q<2> fixed on the underside of the bottom member. The end members slide into grooves p<2> and are formed on their outer faces with vertical grooves engaged by catch-plates p<4> on the sides p.
