def. A ra WITNESS: AHORNEY Patented Nov. an, 1923 -rara- 'srone'en (in-Ara oAsn;
Applieation filed November 6, 1922. Seriailllfo. 599,352.
To all iehom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALBERT BRUCE TUCKER, a citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Birmingham, in the county of Jefferson and State of Alabama, have invented new and useful Improvements in Storage Crate Cases, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to receptacles and has for its object the provision of a novel case designed to receive a crate of eggs or other commodity and adapted to be hermetically sealed whereby to exclude any moisture, the case and its contents being intended to be subsequently placed in cold storage.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will operate to preserve the contents inasmuch as moisture and air cannot gain access thereto, means being furthermore provided for forming air spaces about the cases when they are stacked.
An additional object is the provision of a device of this character which will be simple and inexpensive in manufacture, eflicient in use, durable in service and a general improvement in the art.
\Vith the above and other objects and advantages in view the invention consists in the detail of construction to be hereinafter more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure '1 is a perspective view of the device,
Figure 2 is a longitudinal section and Figure 3 is cross section.
Referring more particularly. to the drawings I have shown my case as comprising a rectangular casing including a bottom 10 and a hollow wall 11 which defines a continuous air space 12. The top of the wall is solid as indicated at 1.3 and is formed with an inwardly extending projection 14 at its upper edge, which projection is formed with a groove or channel 15.
This casing is provided at its corners and at the centers of its sides with vertically extending cleats 16 which terminate fins zontal cleats 18 which are located between the end cleats near the upper ends thereof to constitute finger holds or handles which will facilitate handling the device without danger of its slipping from the operators fingers.
The top of this casing is normally closed by a lid or cover 19 which is removable and which is formed at intervals with ears 20 provided with holes 21 which receive bolts 22 extending upwardly from the top of the case, these bolts carrying wing nuts 23. The underside of this lid or cover is formed with a flange 2 1 which fits conformingly within the groove or channel 15.
In the use of the device the crate of eggs or other perishable commodity is placed within the case, the cover 19 is placed in position and the nuts 23 are tightened to clamp it in place. The engagement of the flange 2% within the channel or groove 15 will make an air tight joint so that moisture and air cannot enter the casing and gain access to the material or articles being preserved.
A very important feature is the provision of the ver ical cleats 16 and the bottom cleats or blocks 17, the former operating to define continuous vertical air spaces when a large number of the cases are stacker and the cleats 17 operating to define holder passages or air spaces. It is of course very highly desirable that these air spaces be provided as they will permit free circulation of air around each and every case and thus prevent mustiness, moulding, sweating or other injurious action.
From the foregoing description and a study of the drawings it will be apparent that I have thus provided a simply constructed and consequently inexpensive storage case which will be highly eflicient for the purpose specified and which will be a distinct improvement in every way.
While I have shown and described the preferred embodiment of the invention it is of course to lee-understood that I reserve the right to make such changes in the form, construction and arrangement of parts as will not depart from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claims.
Having thus described my invention I claim:
1. A device of the character described comprising a casing open at its top and having its upper edge formed with a continuous channel, a cover fitting upon the casing and having its underside formed with a continuous flange seating within said channel, and mea-ns for clamping the cover onto the casing, consisting of up: wardly extending bolts carried by the upper edge 01": the casing, ears on the cover formed with holes receiving said bolts, and wing nuts on said bolts.
2. A storage case comprising a casing. in-
eluding a bottom and a hollow wall defin the casing being open and the top of the wall being closed, an inwardly extending projection at the upper edge of the wall formed with a continuous channel, a cover fitting upon the top of the vWall and formed with a flange fitting within said channel, and clamping bolts passing through the cover and the top of said wall.
In testimony whereof I affix my sig nature.
ALBERT BRUCE TUCKER.
