COOLING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 28,1912.
Application filed December 20, 1910. Serial No. 598,424.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, LAURENA E. LARRANCE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Delia, in the county of Jackson and State of Kansas, haveinvented certain new and useful Improvements in Cooling Devices; and
I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in cooling'devices and more particularly to that class used for storing or shipping purposes and my object is to provide a cooler having an air tightcompartment, one wall of which is provided with any suitable form of lining.
A further object is to provide an ice receptacle to be placed in the cooler.
A further object is to provide a plurality of boxes which are adapted to fit within the cooler and around the ice receptacle.
A further object is to provide partitions or coverings for each tier of boxes, and, a further object is to provide suitable coverings for the ice receptacle and the upper portion of the cooler.
- Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and pointed out in the specification. V y
In the accompanying drawings, which are made a part of this application, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the cooler with the top covering removed. Fig. 2 is a vertical central sectional view therethrough. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the top covering removed from the cooler. Fig. A is a perspective View of the ice receptacle removed from the cooler. Fig. 5 is a perspective view partly in section showing the lower tier of boxes in position. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the cooler with the ice receptacle and boxes removed. Fig. 7 is a perspective view of one of the partitions. Fig. 8 is a perspective view of the cover for the ice receptacle, and, Fig. 9 is a perspective view of one of the boxes.
Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the cooler proper, which may be constructed in any suitable shape, said cooler comprising outer and inner walls 2 and 3, respectively, which are spaced apart to form an air chamber 4 and in order to better protect the wall and prevent the heat from penetrating to the interior, a strip of' asbestos or any suitable lining substance 5 1s placed on the inner face of the outer wall and secured thereto in any suitable manner.
Adapted to be seated in the cooler 1 is an ice receptacle 6, which is preferably constructed of non-corroding or non-rusting .material, said receptacle being substantially the same height as the interior of the cooler, but of smaller dimensions so that by placing the receptacle in the center of the cooler a plurality of boxes 7 may be arranged around the ice receptacle. The boxes are preferably placed in tiers around the ice receptacle, one tier above the other, and to properly separate one tier of the boxes from the next succeeding tiers, partitions 8 are placed over each tier of boxes, each partition having a central opening 9 to receive the ice receptacle and, if desired, suitable finger holes 10 may be provided to facilitate the removal of the partitions. In the present-instance I have shown four' tiers of boxes and three partitions, while the upper tier of boxes is provided with a cover 11, which projects over the upper edge of the cooler and is provided with a depending flange 12, which fits against the inner face of the cooler and rests upon. the upper edges of the upper tier of boxes. The cover is also provided with an opening 13, whereby access may be had to the ice receptacle and this opening is also provided with a cover 14, which is likewise provided with a flange 15 which fits the upper end of the ice receptacle. The central portion of the cover 14 is provided with a depression 16 in which is pivotally mounted a handle or ring 17 which may be readily grasped to remove the cover to which it is attached. The cooler 1 is also provided with a lid 18, which is hinged to one edge of the cooler and has a flange 19 which extends over the outer edge of the cooler when the lid is closed, thereby making a comparatively air tight construction.
This device is adapted for preserving all kinds of fruits, meats, butter and the like and by providing air tight closures for the boxes, different commodities can be placed in the cooler and the odor of one commodity prevented from coming in communi cation with the other commodities in the. cooler. It will further be seen that by placing the boxes around the ice receptacle in single file, all of said boxes will be thoroughly cooled. It Will likewise be seen that after the boxes and the partitions are properly positioned Within the cooler, the ice receptacle may be removed Without disturbing the boxes and after being emptied the receptacle can be again returned to the cooler. It will further be seen that the ice receptacle can be replenished with ice Without disturbing the receptacle or any of the boxes or their covering.
It will further be seen that the boxes and the partitions can be removed Without disturbing the ice receptacle, and, it Will like- Wise be understood that the commodities to be kept cool may be placed in bulk in the cooler and around the ice receptacle, thereby dispensing With the use of the boxes and the partitions.
What I claim is:
In a device of the class described, the combination with a box having a hinged cover, a removable central ice receptacle in the box, a plurality of smaller boxes arranged in tiers around the ice receptacle, horizontal partitions between said boxes having central openings to fit around the ice receptacle; of a cover for the boxes having a central opening to fit around the ice receptacle and an outer flange abutting the top edges of said boxes, and a separate cover for said ice receptacle having a depending flange engaging the inner surface of the side Walls of said receptacle, the top surfaces of said covers being in the same plane to form a seal When the cover of said box is in closed position.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
LAURENA E. LARRANCE.
