Be it known that l, AARON D. FRANKLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Erwin, in the county of Unicoi and State of Tennessee, administrator of the estate of WADE H. MOLAIN, deceased, late a citizen of the United States, and resident of Erwin Tennessee, do hereby declare that the said WADE H. MOLAIN, deceased, invented certain new and useful Improvements in Vacuum Containers; and l: do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The invention relates to that class of shipping and storing vessels that are designed to maintain the temperature of the commodity contained therein as long as possible, and particularly to that class of devices employmg hollow-walled vessels from which the air is discharged to create a vacuum and reduce to a minimum communication between the surfaces of the inner portions of containing walls and thus prevent the temperature of the storage compartment from being influenced by the temperature of the outside air.
The invention has for its object the provision of a container of the character specified that consists of a minimum number of parts, reasonable in cost of manufacture and efl ective in operation.
The device will be described in detail hereinafter and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in -which Flgure 1 1s a side view 1n elevation of my improved container,

Within the storage compartment 1 is a receptacle 5 having side walls 6 spaced apart from side wall a and bottom 7 spaced above bottom 3, the upper edge of side wall 6 being above the upper edge of side wall 4- and joined thereto y an inclined wall 8. All of'said walls and bottoms are made of non-porous airproof material and are joined by air tight joints. I
9 indicates an opening through which air is adapted to be exhausted from the space between the walls and bottoms hereinabove described, and adapted to be closed by means of any suitable closure or plug 10.
11 indicates a cover plate for the bottom of the container to cover the closed opening 9 and prevent tampering with the closure therefor, said plate having a flanged edge y 12 adapted to be removab secured to t bottom portion of side wall t.
13 indicates supports or braces interposed between the bottom 3 and bottom 7 to support the inner receptacle 5 and the ice cream can 14, or other object, contained therein.
The cover 2 comprises a top plate 15, a side wall 16 extending downwardl therefrom, an inside plate 17 smaller in diameter than and spaced apart from top plate 15 and an inclined wall 18 connecting the ed e of inside plate 17 and the lower edge of side wall 16. The space enclosed by side walls 16 and 18 and plates 15 and 17 is hollow and as said walls and plates are made of nonporous, air-proof material and the joints between said walls and plates are air-tight, it is permissible to exhaust the air therefrom to create a vacuum as in the storage compartment 1. In the top plate 15 is an. opening 19, through which the air may be exhausted that is closed by any suitable valve or closure, as plug 20, A cover plate 21 is provided to cover top plate 15 and closed opening 19, said cover plate 21 being provided with a flanged edge 22 to engage the outer side of the upper portion of side wall 16 and to be reinovably secured thereto in any suitable manner.
The inclined wall 8 is formed with an inset horizontal shoulder 23 and the lower edge of inclined wall 18 is provided with an onset horizontal shoulder that seats on shoulder 23, a gasket 25 being inserted between said shoulders to form an air-tight joint.
Walls 8 and 18 are preferably formed with screwthreads, as shown, to provide for holding the cover 2 on container 1 but any other securing means may be used instead without altering the spirit of the invention.

In use it'will be understood that when air is exhausted from the spaces between the walls and end plates of the storage compartment l and cover 2, heat will not be conveyed from one wall or plate to the other wall or plate by radiation sothat the temperature of anything placed in receptacle 5 will be unaffected by the temperature of theatmosphere to a marked degree, and icecream, for instance, contained in said receptacle will be kept chilled for a long time without employment of a chilling agent. The same applies to any hot substance that may be placed in the receptacle, radiation of the heat therefrom being retarded by the absence'of air from spaces between the walls of the container and cover to act as a conveypr of the heat.
aving thus described the invention what is claimed is 2- In a container, a Vacuum storage compartment having a bottom and an outside wall, a receptacle within said outside wall having a'bottom spaced apart' from the first threads and formed with-an inset shoulder adjacent to the upperedge of the outside wall, a vacuum cover section having atop plate and an outside wall, an inner plate spaced apart from and smaller in diameter than said top plate, a downwardly and outwardly inclined wall connecting said inside plate and the lower edge of the outside wall, said inclined'wall on the cover section 'being adapted to seat upon the inclined wall of the storage compartment and screw threaded toengage the screw threads on said inclined wall of the storage compartment, the lower portion of the cover section being provided with a shoulder to seat on the inset shoulder of the storage compartment, and said seat adapted to have a gasket disposed thereon to provide a hermetic seal and dispose the contacting surfaces of the inclined walls completely interiorly of the marginal wall of the container and the gasket.
