Description

I I I I I I I I I I lIIIlrIrIIrA Inventor Attorney Patented July 6, 1943 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE 1 Claim.
My invention relates to improvements in cans, such as are used for carrying gasoline in boats and for refuelling outboard motors, the principal object in view being to equip such cans with a top unit embodying facilities for carrying tools, shear pins, and other accessories for such motors and which are often misplaced or entirely foigotten.
Another object is to provide a tool and accessories carrying chest adapted for use as a top closure for such cans whereby the fuel and chest with contents may be transported as a unit.
To the accomplishment of the above, and the subordinate objects presently appearing, a preferred embodiment of my invention has been illustrated in the accompanying drawing, set c-rth in detail in the succeeding description, and defined in the claim appended hereto.
In said drawing- Figure l is a View in top plan of the preferred embodiment of my invention,
Figure 2 is a similar view with the cover of the chest open,
Figure 3 is a view in vertical section taken on the line 3--3 of Figure 1, and
Figure 4 is a similar view taken on the line 4 4 of Figure l.
Referring to the drawing by numerals, according to my invention the usual flat sided gasoline storage can l, substantially elliptical transversely, is 'provided with a substantially elliptical top 2 having a down-turned edge flange 3 fitting over the top of the can I, and a suitable discharge spout 1i at one end thereof. The top 2 is provided with an elongated, substantially rectangular aperture 5 therein extending lengthwise longitudinally of the same. An open top tool chest 6 is fitted in said aperture 5 to extend down into the can l and with its upper edge projecting sufciently above said top 2 to receive a cap type cover l having an edge flange 8 around the same fitting over the edge of the chest and bearing on said top 2. The upper edge of the chest is bent upon itself inwardly of the chest so that said edge is of double thickness to reinforce the same. The flange 8 is similarly bent so that it is also of double thickness for the same purpose. An upper, corner pocket 9 for shear pins and the like is provided in the chest 6 with its top iiush with the top of the chest, said pocket having side iianges I9 welded, as at II, to one side of the chest. The cover I is hinged, as at I2, to the top 2, said hinges being preferably welded, as at I3, to said top. A bail I4 is provided on the cover I for opening and closing the same. Suitable snap action latching devices I5, iii are provided on the cover 'l and chest B, respectively. At one side of the chest 6, the top 2 is provided With a suitable filler neck l'I closed by a cap I8.
The iiange 3 may be secured to the can I and sealed by any desired means.
The foregoing will, it is believed, sufce to impart a clear understanding of my invention Without further explanation.
Manifestly the invention, as described, is susceptible of modification without departing from the inventive concept, and right is herein reserved to such modifications as fall within the scope of the subjoined claim.
What I claim is:
A top for a can comprising a closure member having an edge iiange adapted to iit over the upper edge of the can, a chest set into the member to project therethrough with a tight iit and having side and end walls extending above the member, and a flanged cover fitting over said side and end walls and down against said member, said cover being hinged to the member.
