Description

L. S. PRENTISS.
COLLAPSIBLE 80X.
APPLICATION FILED JAN. 5, 1918.
1,323,098. Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
A TTORNEY GOLLAPSILBLE BOX.
Application filed January 5, 1918.
- To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LEwIs S. PRENTISS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle, in the county of King, State of Washington, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Collapsible Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in collapsible boxes, and has for its principal object to provide an improved and novel structure, which can be conveniently knocked down, or quickly put together ready for use.
The invention also comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of parts which will be hereinafter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 is a perspective of my box showing the manner of construction.
Fig. 2 is a detail top plan view of the box, parts being in section.
Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of one corner of the side and bottom of the box.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the opposite corner of the box. I
1 indicates a bottom, and surrounding the upper edge of same is a molding 2, formed with an overhanging flange 3. The end sections 4 of the box are provided at their lower ends with outwardly extended flanges 5, which engage under the overhanging flange 3, on the ends of the bottom, and secured to the opposite ends of the end sec tions are posts 6, formed with inwardly extended flanges 7, and resting on the piece of molding 2.
8 indicates the side sections of the box, each having secured to its opposite ends posts 9, the edges of which project out- "wardly from the side of the box to provide a flange 10, to engage behind the flange 7 of the post 6, and extending between the end posts on the side sections are reinfOrc ing bars 11, which are secured to the upper ends of the end sections. The lower ends of the posts 9, are cut out as at 9 to form a shoulder 9 to rest on the molding 2, as
shown in Fig. 3. Spaced from each post 9, on the outside of the side sections are cleats 12, which fit snugly against the post 6 when the box is assembled.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 25, 1919.
Serial No. 210,586.
To the bottom edge of the side sections are secured strips 16, which project outwardly beyond the surfaces of the sides to form flanges 17, which engage under the flanges 5 on the sides of the molding on the bottom.
Extending between the cleats 12, at the upper ends of the side sections and secured thereto, are reinforcing bars 13. To the reinforcing bars is secured a top section 15, to close the box.
VJ hen the structure is set up the flanges 5 and 17 of the end and side sections engage under the flange 3 of the molding and the flanges 7, overlap the flanges 10, of the posts to form an interlock to hold the parts together. i
What I claim is A knock down box comprising four corner posts, each of which is formed on its inner side with a vertical flange, a bottom provided with a continuous edge molding having an inwardly extending flange, the posts being supported on the upper surface of the molding, two sides, each provided at its lower end with an outwardly extending flange to engage under the flange on the molding, a vertical post attached to each end of each side, each vertical post on the sides extending beyond the outer surfaces of the sides to form flanges and provided at their lower ends with notches to form shoulders which rest on the top of the molding on the bottom, the outwardly projecting flanges of the posts on the sides engaging behind the flanges of the posts at the ends, vertical cleats attached to the outer surfaces of the sides near the ends, two end sections formed at their lower ends with flanges to engage the flanges on the molding, means for fastening the ends to the end posts, reinforcing strips on the inside upper portions of the end sections, reinforcing strips on the outside of the upper portions of the sides and a cover secured to the reinforcing strips. 7
In witness whereof I alflx my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
