FOLDING EGG-CRATE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters ratent No. 599,979, dated March 1, 1898.

Be it known that we, ETHA S. YOHE and ISAAC W. PARSONS, citizens of the United States, residing at Wilmington, in the county of New Castle and State of Delaware, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Egg-Crates; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and-exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Ourinvention relates to knockdown or folding boxes principally designed for egg-crates, but which may be employed for any other purpose found desirable.
The invention consists in the I novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a folding or knockdown box constructed in accordance with our invention, showing the same as it appears in use. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same knocked down or folded. Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view 011 line y y of Fig. 4:. Fig. 4 is a transverse section on the line 5c 00, Fig. 3.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the back of the box, 2 the front, and 3 the ends, the bottom of which is beveled at diagonally opposite ends, as seen at 4, and connected, by means of hinges 5,with said front and back, respectively. Said front and back at diagonally opposite ends are provided with inwardly-extending strips 6, with which the other sides of said ends are connected by hinges 7. Hinged to the lower end of the front 2 is the bottom 8, which when the box is knocked down folds up against the inner side of said front.
The back 1 and ends 3 at the lower edges are provided with cleats 9, upon which the bottom rests when unfolded or let down. The front and back are formed with central vertical grooves 10 to receive the removable partitions 12, which hold the bottom in position when the latter is unfolded. The numeral 13 designates the top of the box, hinged to the back 1 and provided at each end with cleats 1 1, which engage with the ends 3. The said ends, front, and back are also provided with cleats 15 at their upper edges. Secured to the free end of said top is a hook 16, with which is adapted to engage when the cover is closed a pintle 17 at one end of a slotted link 18. This link engages with a turn-pin 19, pivoted to a plate 20, secured to the front 1. Pivoted to the link is a slotted catch 21, which engages with a similar turn-pin 23 near the lower right-hand corner of said front when the box is knocked down.
When it is desired to knock down the box, the partitions 12 are removed and the cover turned down against the outer side of the back 1 and the bottom 8 folded up against the inner side of the front 2. The said front and back are then forced outward in opposite directions, causing the ends 3 to turn down in line therewith and the parts to occupy the position shown in Fig. 2. The link is then brought around the edge of the folded box and connected with the turn-pin 23, by which the parts are held in their folded position.
The ordinary folding egg-cells, of pasteboard, may be employed to carry the eggs when the box is in use, which, together with the removable partitions 12, can be folded in the box when the latter is knocked down.
Having now fully described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
In a knockdown box, the combination with the back and front formed with beveled ends and provided with vertical strips at opposite ends, the ends hinged to said front and back and beveled at their meeting edges therewith,
and also hinged to said strips, the vertical partitions seated in grooves in said front and back, and the cleats, of thehinged bottom and cover, the slotted link pivotally connected with the cover, the slotted catch hinged to said link, and the turn-pins pivotally connected with the front of the box, substantially as described.
