UNITED STATES JAMES S. MGQUINN, OF NEWCASTLE, INDIANA.
MOLDING-BOARD.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented. May 15, 1906.
Application filed August '7, 1905. Serial No. 273,074.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES S. MCQUINN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newcastle, in the county of Henry and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molding-Boards; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to molding-boards, and more particularly to that class adapted to be used in connection with kitchen-cabinets; and its object is to provide amolding board of novel construction which will not warp and which can be made of any desired size and is extremely durable.
A further object is to provide a covering for said board whereby moisture will be kept therefrom.
A still further object is to provide means for reinforcing said strips on their under side.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of a molding-board formed of a plurality of strips joined together and each having longitudinally-extending grooves in its lower face. The entire board is covered with metal and has edge strips connected thereto, the whole board being so formed and assembled as to prevent warping.
The invention also consists of certain other novel features of construction and combination of parts which will be more fully described, and pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings I have shown the preferred form of my invention. In said drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet, showing the molding-board extended. Fig. 2 is a central vertical longitudinal section through the board, and Fig. 3 is a bottom plan View of the board removed from the cabinet.
Referring to the figures by numerals of reference, 1 is a cabinet of any suitable form which is provided with a ledge 9, formed upon the front of the casing at a suit-able distance from the bottom thereof, and supported upon this ledge is a molding-board which is adapted to be slid back into the casing or outward therefrom. The molding-board is formed of a plurality of wooden strips 10, having tongues 11 and grooves 12, formed at opposite edges, which are adapted when the strips are assembled to interlock, so as to form a practically continuous board. Each of the strips 10 has grooves 13 cut longitudinally within the lower face thereof and extending throughout their entire length, and all of the strips are covered with a metallic covering 14, which overlaps the edges of the board and is secured thereto by means of fastening devices 15, which extend through edge strips 16, located upon the edges of the board and are of the same relative depth as the strips 10 and depending portions of the covering. Re
inforcing-strips 17 are also fastened to the bottom of the board near the sides thereof and extend transversely across the grooves 13.
By forming a board in this manner the same will not warp, as the grooves in the bottom surface of the board permit the wood adjacent thereto to expand and contract without affecting the upper surface of the board. The edge strips 16 also materially assist in preventing warping, as does the metallic covering 14, which serves to prevent moisture from entering the board through the upper surface thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A molding-board comprising a plurality of strips having tongues and grooves whereby said strips may interlock and each strip having grooves in its lower face, a metallic covering upon the upper faces of the strips and having depending portions at each end and side of the strips, edge strips overlapping the metallic depending portions of the covering and secured to the edges of the board, and reinforcing-strips secured to the lower faces of the grooved strips and transversely to said grooves.
2. A molding-board comprising a plurality of strips having tongues and grooves adapted to interlock with each other and each strip having grooves in its lower face and longitudinally disposed throughout its length, a metallic covering upon the upper faces of said strips and overlapping each edge thereof, edge strips engaging the overlapped portions of said covering of the same relative height as said board and secured to the edges thereof, and reinforcing-strips secured to the lower faces of the grooved strips.
In testimony whereof I-have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
7 JAMES S. MGQUINN.
