HARMON T. NEWBY, OF MARION, INDIANA.
COLLAPSIBLE BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 19, 1907.
Application filed December 27, 1906. Serial No. 349.669.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARMON T. N EWBY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marion, inthe county of Grant and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and use- .in a compact manner for reshipment at a consequently reduced freight rate.
With these ends in view, my invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangements of parts as illustrated in the drawings and set forth in the specification and claims hereonto appended.
In the accompanying drawings in which like parts are designated by like characters throughout the several viewsz-Figure l is a longitudinal vertical sectional view of my invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view cut on the line 2 2 of Fig. l and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of the box when folded up for shipment. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the box showing the walls partly disconnected in order to illustrate the manner of assembling the parts of the box.
My invention is described as follows:-
The box comprises six boards-jointed or locked together. Each board is preferably made of a single piece and for convenience in reference, I will refer to the boards 1 and 2 as the top and bottom of the box, respectively, the boards 3 as the ends thereof, and the boards 4 as the sides of the box.
Secured to the inner faces of the sides of the box near their upper and lower edges, are longitudinal strips or cleats 5 and 6 respectively.
The bottom of the box is provided on its upper face, adjacent one of its side edges,
.with suitable hinges 7 by means of which said bottom is hinged to one of the longitudinal strips or cleats 6, and has fulcrumed on its upper face near its opposite side edge a hook 8 adapted to engage in a catch 9, se-
cured in the upper face of the adjacent lower strip or cleat 7.
The boards 3, which I have denominated the ends, extend somewhat above and below the plane of the upper and lower edges of the sides 4, and are provided on their inner faces near their upper and lower edges with transverse strips or cleats S and 9 respectively, which are located above and below said longitudinal strips or cleats 5 and 6, respectively, of said sides, and are pivotally connected near their ends thereto by vertical pintles 10. Said top 1, is pivotally connected to the side edges of one of the ends of the box near its upper end by links 10, perforated near their ends for the passage of pins 11 by which said links are pivoted to the parts which they connect. Said top is provided on its under face near the end thereof opposite its hinged end with a fastener 12, provided in one end with a square perforation, and pivotally held in position by a wire clasp 13 secured in the under face of said top immediately under said fastener. Said top is provided near said last-mentioned end in vertical alinement with the square perforation of said fastenter 12 with a vertical perforation 14. Said fastener may be turned to the right or left, as desired, when its outer end engages the under face of the adjacent transverse strip or beam 8 and locks the top securely in position, by employing a square nail or square piece of metal as a key. A special key, may, if found desirable, be made for this purpose.
The top, bottom, sides and ends of the box are not necessarily solid, but may be slatted and the box may be constructed of wood, metal, or such other material as is found desirable.
I do not coniine'myself to the specific construction described, but claim the right to make such changes therein that fairly fall within the scope of myinvention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is
A collapsible box comprising side and end walls, the latter being extended above and below the plane of the upper and lower edges of the side walls, cleats attached to, and ex tending longitudinally of, the inner faces of the side walls at their upper and lower edges, inwardly projecting cleats attached to and extending transversely of the box at the upper and lower edges of the end walls to overlap the ends of the rst-named cleats, vertical pintles extended through the overlapping ends of the cleats for pivotally connecting the walls of the box, a bottom hinged at one side edge to the adjacent lower side cleat and adapted to fold upward against the inner face of the corresponding side wall of the box between the cleats, means for iiXing the bottom in operative position, a cover for the boX arranged to close between the end cleats7 links terminally pivoted to one end of the cover and the adjacent end wall of the boX for movably connecting the cover therewith, the cover being adapted to fold downward upon the outer face of the end Wall to which it is attached, and means for fixing the cover in operative position.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
