EGG-CASE.
Application filed June 1, 1903.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARNOLD C. SEGEssE- MANN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Amazonia, in the county of Andrew and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Cases, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in foldable egg cases, the objects of which are, to provide a foldable egg case, in which the edges of the wooden ends, sides and partition thereof, are reinforced, strengthened and stiffened by the detachable fastening means, secured thereon, whereby said parts are detachably fastened together; thereby rendering said parts very strong and durable, combined with extreme lightness of weight; and to so construct and arrange the parts of a foldable egg case, that when said parts are fastened together in erect position for use, by said fastening means, they shall form an egg case that is extremely rigid and substantial, adapted to hold a plurality of ordinary foldable paste-board egg fillers, and wherein said parts are secured together in said erect position by securing devices, inaccessible from the outside of said egg case, when the same is covered.
Further objects are to so arrange the parts of said egg case that they may be secured together in folded, compact form, occupy the minimum amount of space, and when so folded, shall form on the bottom of said case, a compartment of size and shape, suitable to hold said foldable fillers, when the same are folded.
I attain these objects by the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a top plan of the case, showing the parts in erect position, with the cover removed to avoid obscurity. Fig. 2 is a transverse section, on the line X X seen in Fig. 1, looking toward the left. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section on the line Y Y, seen.
in Fig. 2. Fig. A is a view in perspective of the parts in folded position. Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the dovetail connection between the sides and ends. Fig. 6 is an enlarged view of the securing device, the end of the egg case being shown in section.
Referring to Figs. 2 and 3, my invention comprises the bottom A, on the four edges of which, are rigidly secured the two end boxings A and'the two side boxings i- Specification of Letters Eatent.

forming a compartment on said bottom, adapted to hold a plurality of ordinary foldable pasteboard egg tillers, (not shown,) when the same are folded. Said compartment is also adapted to hold partition E when the parts of the case are folded in the position seen in Fig. l, as hereinafter described. The lower edges of sides B and B are secured to side boxings A" by hinges D and are rotatable on said hinges from the position seen in Fig. 2, to the position seen in Fig. 4, for folding the case.
Referring to Figs. 1 and 5, the vertical edges of partition E and of ends C are detachably fastened to sides B and B by the fastening devices F and H, and since said devices are exactly alike in their construction and operation, a detailed description of one is suflicient. The vertical edge of end G has the reinforcing metal strip H secured thereto by screws S, which pass through apertures in said strip and are screwed into said end. Said strip has channel H of dovetail shape, formed throughout the entire length thereof. On the inner surface of side B, the reinforcing metal strip I is secured by screws T, passed through apertures in said side and screwed into screw threaded apertures in strip I. Said strip has boss I of dovetail shape formed thereon, the entire length thereof; said boss being of suitable size and shape to freely slide in channel H.
It will be seen and understood from the foregoing, that the described fastening device provides reinforcing and stiffening means whereby ends C, partition E and sides B andB, are rendered substantial and rigid, and also provides detachable fastening means, whereby said parts are secured together, as seen, and render the case, formed thereby very rigid and durable.
Referring to Fig. 3, the rotatable hook O and link 0 are used to secure lid C on ends C, and, for securing said ends to end boxings A at a point inaccessible from the outside of the case; the details of the latter being seen in Fig. 6, at which point cavity P is formed in the inner surface of end C and end boxing A, to permit said hook and link to be operated. That part of cavity P which is formed in end boxing A, as seen in Fig. 4, provides a route, through which links 0 are extended from the inside of said end boxing, to the outside thereof in a comparatively straight line, from which point said links extend upward and engage the previously mentioned hooks O, on cover C, thereby detachably securing said cover in the position seen, with ends O on side B, beneath said cover.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
In a foldable egg case, in combination, a bottom for said case, side boXings and end boxings, secured on said bottom and adapted to form a compartment on said bottom; said end boxings having a cavity formed in each, in the inner surface thereof, and being provided with a series of links, the end one of which is secured on said inner surface; ends for said case, said ends each having a cavity formed in its lower edge, in the central portion thereof, and being provided with a securing hook, secured on said end, in front of said cavity, therein; for engaging said links, and thereby securing said end on said end boxing; a partition for said case, provided with said hook and link securing means, adapted to secure said partition on said bottom; metal strips, secured on the vertical edges of said ends and partition, adapted to stiffen the same; said strips having dovetail shaped channels formed therein, throughout the entire length thereof; sides for said case; other metal strips, one across each end and one across the center of each of said sides, adapted to stiffen the same; each of said other strips having a boss of dovetail shape,
formed thereon, throughout the entire length thereof; said bosses being adapted to freely slide in said channels, in the first mentioned strips; a cover for said case, provided with one of said securing hooks, secured on each of the end portions thereof; said hooks being adapted to be engaged by links, secured on the upper edge of each of said ends, when the parts of said case are in erect position, and to be engaged by links, passed through the said cavities in said end boxings, when the parts are in folded position.
In testimony whereof I afliX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
