TTED ST WILLIAM CORTES, 0F PERRYOPOLIS, PENNSYLVANIA.
FOLDING BOX.
fineness.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, WILLIAM Comes, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Perryopolis, in the county of Fayette and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Boxes, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding boxes, and has for its object to provide a box of 10h class in a manner as hereinafter set forth, capable of being folded in a compact manner and to further provide a box with means in a manner as hereinafter set forth for detachably connecting the side and end walls together.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a folding box, which is simple in its construction and arrangement, strong, durable, readily set up and inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views :Figure 1 is a front elevation of a folding box in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is an end view, Fig. 3 is a top plan, Fig. 1- is a longitudinal section, Fig. 5 is a transverse section, Fig. 6 is a longitudinal section when folded, Fig. 7 is a transverse section when folded, and Fig. 8 is an enlarged sectional view illustrating the means for detachably connecting a front and rear wall to an end wall.
Referring to the drawings in detail, 1 denotes a bottom having fixed to its upper face a pair of longitudinally extending cleats 2, 3, the latter being of greater height than the former and the said cleats 2, 3, are flush with the longitudinal edges of the bottom 1.
The reference character 1 denotes the front wall and the reference character 5 the rear wall of the box, the former being of greater height than the latter, and hinged as at 6, to the cleat 2 while the rear Specification of Letters Patent.

wall 5 is hinged as at 7 to the cleat 3. The hinged connections between the front and rear walls 1-, 5, and the cleats 2, 3, are such that the said walls can fold inwardly as illustrated in Fig. 7.
Hinged as at 9 and 10 to the bottom 1 are respectively end walls 11, 12, each of which is capable of folding inwardly upon the bottom 1 and support the front wall 41 when the latter is folded inwardly. Each of the end walls, near its top, is formed with a pair of rectangular slots 13 and 1 1, and each of said walls has each side edge near the top thereof formed with a notch 15, and leading from the notch. to a slot on the inner and outer faces of the end wall is a groove 16. Each of the end walls is furthermore provided with longitudinally extending openings 17, which establish communication between the notches and the rectangular slots. Seated in each groove 16 as well as being secured to an end wall by holdfast devices 18 is a plate 19, having one end thereof inturned as at 20 to extend partly across the inner end of the opening 17. Each of the end walls has its outer face formed with a groove 21 having pivotally mounted therein a handle 22.
The front wall l, as well as the rear wall 5, at each end, is formed with an opening 22", which when the said walls are in an upright position aline with the opening 17. The front wall l, as well as the rear wall 5, has secured to its outer face, near each end, a plate 23, formed with the opening 2 1 which registers with an opening 22.
The front wall 4: and rear wall 5 are detachably connected to the end walls 11, 12, through the medium of beaded bolts 25, which extend through the openings 17, 22 and 2 1, the head 26 of the bolt abutting against the inturned ends of the plate 16. Mounted upon the outer ends of the bolts are nuts 27, which abut against the plates 23.
hen the end walls 11 and 12 are detacln ably connected from the front wall 1 and rear wall 5, the bolts are shifted into the slots of said end walls, the nuts 27 being removed. After the bolts 25 have been shifted, the nuts 27 are mounted uponthe bolts and positioned in the notches 15.
The cover is formed of two sections 28, 29, which are hinged together at 30. The section 29 of the cover is hinged to the top of the rear wall 5 as at 31. The section 28 of the cover is formed with an opening 32,
through which is adapted to extend a shiftable latch 33, the latter being carried by the front wall 4: and when in securing position extends through the opening 32 and can be shifted to engage the top of the section 28. The latch 33 is of inverted L-shape.
What I claim is A folding box comprising a bottom, a
front, rear and end Walls hinged therewith,
for the passage of said bolts, nuts mounted upon the bolts for detachably connecting the end walls to the front and rear walls, said end walls provided with notches for the reception of the nuts when the end walls are folded, and means for detachably connecting the cover to the wall.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
