Be it known that I, ALFRED NEWTON MIL- LER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and Improved Knockdown Box, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.

The invention relates to wooden receptacles, and its object is to provide a new and improved knock down box for shipping eggs, oranges, bottled goods and the like, and arranged to permit convenient knocking down of the parts for packing the same into a small package, to be returned to the shipper for reassembling of the parts and reuse of the box.

The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more particularly described herein after and then pointed out in the claims.-

A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part'of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the box body; Fig. 2 is a like view of the cover inverted; Fig. 3 is a view of a horizontal section of the improvement on the line 33 of Fig. 4; Fig. 4 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 44 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 5 is a cross section of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 3.

The knock down box in its general construction consists of a bottom A, a top B, sides C, C and ends D, D, the bottom A and the top B being connected with each other by bolts E, E, to hold the several parts securely in a locked position. The top B is provided near its outer edge with a continuous mortise B and a similar mortise -A is formed in the upper side of the bottom A. The sides C, C as well as the ends D, D are provided with tenons C C D D fitting the corresponding mortises, it being understood that the side portions of the tenons D D also fit mortises C, C in the sides 0, C. The bolts E and E for locking the top of the cover B in place and for fastening the several parts in position fit into recesses D", D formed on the inner faces of the ends D and D, and the heads E of the said bolts E, E fit into recesses A formed in the bottom A, and the nuts E of the said bolts E, E fit into recesses B with the said slots.

If desired, the interior of the box body may be divided into two compartments, and for this purpose a partition F may be em ployed having a continuous tenon F fitting corresponding mortises A B C, C 1n the bottom A, the top B and the sides C, C, respectively.

From the foregoing it will be seen that by the arrangement described the several parts constituting the box are snugly fitted to gether by tenons and mortises, to insure the formation of an exceedingly strong and durable box, and one that is practically rendered air and moisture proof.

It will also be noticed that the cover B can be readily removed from the box by unscrewing the nuts E, to permit convenient access to the interior of the box, and by re moving the bolts E and E and pulling the several parts apart it is evident that the box can be conveniently knocked down and its parts folded into a small package which can be economically returned to the shipper for reassembling of the parts and reuse of the box.
