To @ZZ w 7mm t may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT B. QUAGKEN- BUSH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forest Knolls, in the county of Marin and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Telescopic l/Vagon Boxes; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in wagon boxes and more particularly to those of the telescopic nature which are adapted primarily for attachment to automobiles, for commercial purposes. l/Vhile I am aware that devices of this character have heretofore been provided, it is the object of my invention to 'provide an extremely simple and rigid construction, in which the sides and bottoms of the inner and outer telescopic sections are reinforced by bars of angle metal which perform the additional function of forming tracks slidably engaged with each other, whereby the sections may be readily moved one within the other, to vary the length of the box.
A further aim is to make provision for slidab-ly connecting the upper edges of the side walls of the inner and outer box sections and for holding them in adjusted relation with each other.
With the foregoing in view, the invention resides in the novel subject matter hereinafter describedand claimed, the description being supplemented by the accompanying drawing.
Figure 1 is a side elevation.
Figure 2 is a partial plan view.
Figure 3 is a detail vertical section on line 3-3 of Fig. l.
Figure 4 is a vertical longitudinal section partly in elevation taken substantially on line 4-4 of Fig. 2..
In the drawings above briefly described, the numeral 1 designates an outer relatively stationary section of the improved telescopic box, while 2 has reference to the inner or movable section. The two sections are preferably formed of wood reinforced by metal as hereinafter fully described.
The section l comprises a bottom 3, a pair of side walls 4 and a pair of angle metal bars 5 extending throughout the length of said bottom and side walls, each of the bars 5 being provided with a vertical flange 6 seside of one of the side walls 4 and having a horizontal-flange 8 secured at 9..to the lower edge of this `side wall and secured by additional means 10 to thebottom- 3, the flanges 8 of the two bars being of a width to lextend inwardly beyond .the side walls 4.
The inner section 2 consists of a bottom 11 disposed over the bottom a pair of-side walls 12 at theinner sides of :the walls 4, and a pair of longitudinal angle .metal bars 13. These bars have vertical flanges 14'secured against the sides of the walls 12 and horizontal flanges 15 secured to the lower side of the bottom 11 and to the lower edges of said walls 12. The flanges 15 rest upon the iianges 8 and it will thus be seen that the angle bars 5 and 13 form effective tracks for guiding the relative movements of the sections 1 and 2, as well as performing the function of effectively reinforcing said sections.
A pair 4of metal straps 16 are secured to the upper edges of the walls 12 to enga e the horizontal flanges 17 of a pair of ang e metal bars 18, said flanges being secured by screws or the like 19 to the upper edges of the side walls 4. The, bars 8 are provided with vertical flanges 20 which engage the inner sides of the walls 12. This arrangement holds the two sections against relative sagging when one is extended with respect to the other and at the same time the side walls 4 and 12 are braced against lateral movement.
For holding the two sections 1 and 2 in relatively adjusted positions, I provide a pair of vertical set-screws 21 which as shown in Figs. 1 and 4, are threaded upwardly through the inner ends of the straps 16 'and the adjacent upper portions 22 of the side walls 12, whereby to bind against the flanges 17, after the necessary adjustment has been made. The inner ends'of the side walls 12 are cutaway as indicated at 23, so that access may be readily had to the heads of the set-screws 21.
From the foregoing g, it will be seen that although my invention is of extremely simple nature, it will be very advantageous, particular attention being directed tothe novel arrangement of parts whereby the two telescopic sections of the box arereinforced and smoothly guided during their relative movements. j
As excellent results may be obtained from the details ',disclosed, they are preferably.l foltlowed. However, within the scope of the invention as claimed, numerous minor changes may be made.
I claim:
l. A telescopic wagon box comprising a stationary section comprising a bottom, upstanding side walls andafpairof angle metal bars having horizontal flanges secured upon said bottom and vertical'lianges secured to said side walls, said horizontal flanges extending inwardly beyond saidk side walls; and an inner movable section comprising a bottom over the first named bottom, side walls at the inner sides of said'first named side walls, anda pair of longitudinal angle metal bars, the latter havingvertical flanges securedv against the outer sides of the second named side walls and horizontal flanges se cured againstV the lower side of the second mentioned bottoms; the horizontal flanges of the second named bars resting slidably on the horizontal flanges of the rst named bars.
2. A structure as specified in clairn l; togetherv with metal straps along the upper edges of said second named side walls, angle metal bars securedto the upper edges of said first named side. walls and having flanges at the inner sides of said, second' named side walls, and vertical set screws threaded upwardly through said metal straps and the upper portions of said lsecond mentioned side walls to bind against said last named angle metal bars, said second mentioned side walls beingu cut away at their rear ends to receive the heads of said set screws.
In testimony whereof Ihave hereunto affixed my signature.
ALEERT B. QUAcKENBUsH.
