Abstract
291,983. Richards, W. A. R., and Bentley, F. E. July 27, 1927. Turning-gear.-In a device for disconnecting a starting-handle j if the engine turns backwards at starting, a clutch member b is movable axially in the hub w of the starting-handle, by means of a push-rod k, into engagement with a clutch member a mounted on a starting shaft f, which carries a clutch y for engagement with a clutch z on the engine shaft. A sleeve t surrounding the member a is secured to the hub w by an enclosing screw-threaded sleeve r, and pins h on the sleeve t bear against springs q in slots in the face of a ratchet wheel n, which is loosely mounted on the shaft f and engaged by a pawl p in a fixed bracket o. The wheel n is retained in place by a flange m. A semi-circular catch member d is pivoted on a pin e on the clutch member b, and the pin e is adapted to be engaged by a spring-controlled catch c pivoted on the clutch member a. In use, the member b is pushed into engagement with the member a by means of the rod k and is held by the catch c. At the same time, a stop pin in the hub w bears against the end of the catch d and brings it into engagement with a clutch face on the member a. The handle and shaft. f are then pushed axially against a spring x to bring the clutches y, z into engagement, and are turned to start the engine. If the engine turns backwards, the wheel n is held by the pawl p, the shock is taken up by the springs q, and a pin u on the wheel n engages the catch c and releases it from the pin e, whereupon the clutch member b is disengaged from the member a by a spring g.
