360,219. Turning-gear. FRY, R. J., O'Reardon Street, Alexandria, near Sydney, Australia. Nov. 26, 1930, No. 35553. [Class 7 (v).] A starting-handle for internal-combustion engines comprises a crank handle 1 rotatable on a shaft 4 adapted to engage the engine shaft, the handle 1 being coupled to the shaft 4 by a toggle-jointed member 6, 9 which is released, when the shaft 4 is rotated in the reverse direction, by an element carried by a pawl-controlled ratchet wheel 16 turning in the starting direction with the handle 1. The member 6 is pivoted at 8 between the bifurcated arms 1, 3 of the handle, and-a a pawl 9 pivoted at 10 on the member 6 engages a notched disc 14 on the shaft 4, the engagement being effected by means of a handle 15 on the member 6. A spring 11 anchored against a pin 12 bears against the pawl 9. Mounted loosely on the shaft 4 is the ratchet wheel 16 engaged by a pawl 11 on a chassis member 18. When the handle 1 is turned in the clockwise direction, it bears against a pin 21 on the ratchet wheel 16 and rotates the wheel. If the shaft 4 turns backwards,' the toggle 6, 9 is broken by a projection 20 on the wheel 16, releasing the pawl 9 from the disc 14, and'the handle 1 is arrested by anabutment 19 on the projection 20.
