Turning-gear. -In order to disconnect the starting-handle if the engine turns backwards, a ring 14 rotated by the handle 2 is connected to the shaft 1 by a member 10 fitting in a longitudinal groove 3 in the shaft. Figs. 5, 6, 8, 9 show transverse sections on the lines A - - D, Fig. 1. The member 10 is normally held in the position shown, in which the edge 27 of a reduced part 13 engages a recess in the ring 14, by a spring-pressed ball 9 movable in an aperture 5 in a member 15 on the shaft 1 and acting on a projection 12 on the member 10. A second projection 11 bears against balls 6, 7 in an aperture 4 in the shaft 1, the ball 7 engaging a recess 23 in a rotatable ring 19 having a one-way ratchet connection 20, 17 with a fixed ring 16 surrounding the member 15. When the engine turns backwards, the ring 19 cannot rotate and the inclined face 23 forces the balls 6, 7 inwards, turning the member 10 into such a position that the part 13 no longer engages the ring 14. The relative movement of the rings 14, 19 is limited by a pawl 25 on the ring 14 engaging in a recess 24 in the end face of the ring 19.
