Abstract

489,384. Valves. GRESHAM, H. E. Feb. 3, 1937, Nos. 3181 and 19860. [Class 7(vi)] In poppet valves formed with a hollow stem to receive a coolant, the head is made in two parts welded together, either the outer or the inner part being integral with the stem, and the outer or both parts made of an alloy of approximately 80 per cent nickel and 20 per cent chromium, such as that known under the Registered Trade Mark " Brightray." The Figure shows a valve composed of a hollow stem A with a tapered end over which is placed a ring B forming the outer part of the head, the whole being welded together either by electric welding, or by filling grooves C, C<1> with welding-material. In another form, the stem is integral with the outer part of the head, the central part of which is then formed by a plug welded in position. The stem may be subjected to surface hardening produced by the impact of hardened steel balls falling from a height thereon.
