Abstract

429,080. Turning-gear. BOSCH AKT.- GES., R., 4, Militõrstrasse, Stuttgart, Germany. Sept. 18, 1934, Nos. 26805 and 26806. Convention dates, Sept. 18, 1933 and Oct. 28, 1933. Addition to 385,813. [Class 7 (v)] In an electric starter having an inertia mass 4 on the armature shaft 1, and an automatic plate clutch 6 between the mass 4 and a pinion 2 movable into engagement with an engine member, as described in the parent Specification, the pinion 2 is moved into engagement by a lever 7, which releases the clutch, while a movement of the lever in the opposite direction first engages the clutch and afterwards disengages the pinion. According to the present invention, means is provided for locking the lever 7 when the pinion 2 is in engagement and the clutch 6 released, the locking means being released when the clutch 6 is put into engagement. As shown in Fig. 5, a rod d, pivotally connected to the lever 7, is slidable in a box a provided with a front cover b having an opening c, a spring-actuated locking bolt m having a limited vertical movement, and a spring q holding the rod in engagement with the bolt m. When the rod d is pulled to the right in Fig. 5 by means of a handle e to engage the pinion with the engine gear and to disengage the clutch 6, the bolt m snaps into a recess i in the rod. When the mass 4 has been set in rotation by the starting motor, the rod d is depressed into the position shown in Fig. 7, so that a recess k engages the lower edge of the opening c, the spring 8 draws the side edge of the recess into engagement with the front of the cover b, and the rod is clear of the bolt m. This movement brings the clutch into engagement. When the engine has started and the clutch 6 is automatically released by the threaded connection 3, the handle e is released by the operator and the rod d is returned to its initial position by the springs q, 8. In a modification, Fig. 8, the rod d has a pin-and-slot connection f, h with projections g on the box a, which is mounted behind an opening in the dashboard s, and the rod is connected to the lever 7 by a cord r. The box a may also be provided with a pivoted pawl t for engagement with ratchet teeth w between two recesses i, v in the rod, in order to prevent the return movement of the rod, prior to the engagement of the clutch, until the pinion is fully in engagement.
