Abstract

Turning-gear.- In order to prevent a. starting-handle from being driven backwards, a ratchet wheel 1 is fixed on the shaft 2 of the starting handle and coacts with a pawl 4 carried by a rod 6 suitably mounted under. spring or dashpot control. As shown, the pawl 4 slides under the control of a spring 13 on a fitting 5 on the end of the rod 6, which slides in a cylinder 7 and is cushioned by a spring 8. Instead of or in addition to the spring 8, oil or other liquid may be enclosed in the cylinder 7, and holes or a groove 9 formed in the end of the plunger, so that the device acts as a dashpot; or the cylinder may contain compressed air or gas.
