Abstract

Turning-gear. - A starting-handle 2 acts through a spring 7 or 13, which connects the shaft 1 of the starting-handle to a clutch 8 for engagement with the engine shaft 3. Backward movement of the starting-handle is prevented by a pawl engaging a ratchet 4 on the shaft 1, so that if the engine starts backwards, its motion is taken up by the spring. In one form, Fig. 1, the spring 7 is enclosed in a tubular part of the shaft 1. In a modification, Fig. 3, the spring 13 connects lugs 11, 12 on the handle shaft 10 and the clutch member 8.
