Abstract

23,297. S c a rborough, J. T. Jan. 27, 1912. Turning - g e a r. - A starting - g e a r , particularly for motorc y c l e s, comprises a ratchet-wheel 2 fixed on the engine shaft and surrounded by a sleeve 3 carrying a spring- pressed pawl 11 for engagement w i t h the ratchet teeth. To turn the engine, a wire wound in a groove in the sleeve is pulled, a helical spring, attached to the sleeve and a stationary part of the apparatus, returning the sleeve &c. to their normal positions. A spring-carried stud 22 moves the pawl out of engagement with the ratchet-wheel when the operating-handle 23 is pushed into a hole 16.
