291,143. Round, H. J. Feb. 23, 1927. Thermionic amplifiers and detectors. - An inductive reactance or choke is inserted between the plate of one valve and the grid of a following valve, in series with the coupling condenser of the resistance-capacity coupling; the object being to keep up the amplification of the higher voice frequencies. Fig. 1 shows a valve 1 coupled to a following valve by the usual plate resistance 5, coupling condenser 7, and grid leak 11. The choke 8 is inserted on one or other side of the condenser 7; and a condenser 13 (which may be shunted by a damping-resistance. 14) is connected across the grid and filament. At the resonance frequency of the choke in combination with the grid-filament capacity, amplification is increased, whilst beyond that frequency there is a comparatively sharp cut off, which may be adjusted to about five or six thousand cycles. The choke also tends to prevent radio frequency currents from passing from a detector into an audio-frequency amplifier. A condenser 15 may be employed to by-pass radio frequency currents between the plate and filament of the valve 1; and the provision of the choke counteracts the tendency for this condenser to reduce amplification of the higher voice frequencies.
