Cut - out arrangements.-In a balanced protective system of the Merz- Price type for machines and apparatus, in order to make the current transformers 2<1>, 2<11> with the differentially-connected secondaries 4<1>, 4<11> available for other purposes (such as the operation of measuring instruments or other relays) similar auxiliary secondaries 3', 3<11> are wound in the same sense on each transformer and these auxiliary secondaries are connected together for circulating current in the measuring instruments &c. The relay 5 is set so that the maximum current arising from inherent differences in the characteristics of the transformers due to equal currents through both of them is inadequate to operate the relay. Further, to avoid incorrect release the current transformers are so chosen that their magnetizing current corresponding to the secondary voltage necessary to effect release of the relays is of the same order of magnitude as the release current.
