Abstract

619,015. Protective cut-out systems. LONDON PASSENGER TRANSPORT BOARD, and READMAN, A. Nov. 19, 1946, No. 34299. [Class 38 (v)] A protective system for direct-current feeders utilizes an alternating-current protective circuit. Four iron-cored transformers T1 ... T4 are arranged in pairs with their primary windings forming part of the circuit 10, 11 to be protected and their secondary windings S1 ... S4 connected in bridge formation, the secondary windings S2, S4 being wound in opposite sense to S1, S3. An A.C. voltage is applied across two points 12, 13 of the bridge and a trip relay R is connected across the other two points 14, 15. Under normal conditions, the bridge is balanced as points 14, 15 have the same potential. Should a fault occur, the resulting potential difference at points 14, 15 will cause the operation of the relay R. This protective circuit may be used to protect two parallel D.C. lines of the same polarity (Fig. 2, not shown), or to protect a single D.C. line (Fig. 3, not shown). In the latter case the pairs of transformers are arranged at opposite ends of the line and connected by a 3-core pilot cable. The transformers may have single turn primary windings and additional multi-turn windings for test purposes. The Specification sets out the theory of the operation of the system.
