Abstract

540,973. Protective cut-out systems. GENERAL ELECTRIC CO., Ltd., ABBOTT, A., and GARRARD, C. J. O. March 5, 1940, No. 4098. [Class 38 (v)] A bus-bar system 3, preferably of the metalclad type subject to earth-faults only, is protected against such faults by a biassed differential relay 15, the operating winding 1A of which is energized by the total unbalance from current-transformer groups 10 -. 13 in all the circuits connected to the bars, whereas the restraining winding 22 is energized by the total resultant neutral-to-earth current from current transformers 20, 21 in one or more connections 18, 19 of generators 1, 2, and in series with the coil 23 of an earth-leakage relay having its contacts 26 in series with contacts 25 of the differential relay in a master trip-circuit for all the breakers. With earth-faults on the bars 3, winding 1A overpowers winding 22 and, as 26 also close, tripping results. With external earth-faults, the out-of-balance current in 1A, due to saturation, is insufficient to close 25, so no tripping occurs. With external phasefaults, 23 does not close 26, so again no tripping occurs.
