Abstract
553,260. Protective cut-out arrangements. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd., TRENCHAM, H., and MORTLOCK, J. R. March 25, 1942, No. 3962. [Class 38 (v)] In order to avoid lightly-insulating the cable-entry chambers 4 from the rest of the framework in an earth - leakage protection arrangement of the general character disclosed in Specification 551,059, and at the same time enable the protection to discriminate between cable - faults and faults in the breakers or busbars (internal faults), each cable has a current transformer 11 connected in shunt to the secondary of the protection transformer 7 in the earthing connection 6, and arranged to assist the current in 6 to operate the directional relay 9 if the fault - current flows from the gear into the cable, but restrain such relay if the fault current enters the gear from the cable. The reference coil 10 of the relay may be current or voltage responsive, or alternatively the output of transformers 11 may energize such coil. In Fig. 2, the output of 11 feeds a further directional relay 9' having normally-closed contacts 12' in series with the normally open contacts 12 of relay 9. If the fault current flows from the cables to the gear, contacts 12<SP>2</SP> open and prevent tripping. The trip circuit may also include contacts of a relay (not shown) in the neutral earthing conductor of the system.
