Abstract
551,090. Protective. cut-out arrangements. BAGNALL, R. I., and FOSTER TRANSFORMERS & SWITCHGEAR, Ltd. Sept. 19, 1941, No. 12014. [Class 38 (v)] The supply to a portable apparatus is interrupted, on failure of the safety earthing connection 8 from the exposed metal 7 of the apparatus, by the unbalancing of normally-balanced trip coils 5, 6, energized from an additional secondary 3 on the supply transformer, the coil 6 having an energizing circuit comprising the connection 8, an additional connection to earth 9 near that 8, and the lead between the junction point of 3 with the normal secondary and the exposed metal to which one end of the apparatus-winding 10 also is connected. The connection 8 may consist of a core in the flexible supply cable and an overload coil 11 for the main circuit-breaker 4 may be provided. In modifications, winding 3 may have a separate primary in parallel to that of the main transformer, Fig. 2 (not shown). In polyphase arrangements, the winding 3 may be connected at one end to the neutral of the secondary of the supply transformer, which neutral is also connected to the metal 7, Fig. 3 (not shown), or, where one of the three-phase lines is itself at earth potential, the winding 3 may be connected at one end to that line, which is connected to the metal 7 and so to the outer end of the corresponding winding of the apparatus. Fig. 4 (not shown).
