Monoazo dyes yielding dyeings fast to kierboiling and to light are produced in substance or on the fibre by coupling diazotized 2 : 3- or 2 : 5- dichloro-4-aminotoluene with arylides of 2 : 3- oxynaphthoic acid. In examples the following dyestuffs are produced upon cotton yarn by treatment first in the grounding liquor and thereafter in the diazo bath, the shades being as stated :- (1) 2 : 5-dichlor-4-aminotoluenene # 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic-anilide, clear scarlet-red; (2) 2 : 3- dichloro-4-aminotoluene # 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic- 5<1>-chloro-2<1>-toluidide, vivid bluish-red ; (3) a technical mixture of 2 : 3-and 2 : 5-dichloro-4- aminotoluenes # 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic-4<1>-chloro- 2<1>-anisidide, turkey-red; (4) 2 : 3-dichloro-4- aminotoluene # 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic-5<1>-chloro-2<1>- anisidide, bluish turkey-red. A table is also given showing the shades obtained by coupling the diazo compound of one or other of the above dichloroaminotoluenes or of the technical mixture with specified arylides viz. the anilide, o- and ptoluidides, o- and m-chloranilides, m-nitranilide, o- and p-anicidides, o- and m-phenetidides, 5'- chloro-2<1>-toluidide, 4<1>-(or 5<1>)-chloro-2<1>-anisidide, 2<1> : 5<1> - dimethoxyanilide, and alpha-and #-naphthalides.
