Azo dyes insoluble in water and of good fastness, are produced in substance or on the fibre by coupling diazotized 3: 5-dihalogen-2-aminotoluenes with arylides of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid. The following examples are specified. (1) Wellboiled cotton yarn is dyed a fast scarlet shade by treatment in a grounding liquor containing the 4<1>-chloro-2<1>-anisidide of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and development with diazotized 3 : 5-dichloro-2- aminotoluene, and vivid yellowish red shades are similarly obtained when the arylide used is the 5<1>-chloro-2<1>-anisidide, the 2<1>-anisidide, or the 2<1> : 5<1>-dimethoxyanilide. (2) Strong brown, middle red, and bluish red dyeings are similarly obtained by grounding with the dianisidide, the 4<1>-chloro-2<1>-toluidide, and the 1<1>-naphthylamide respectively of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and developing with diazotized 3 : 5-dibromo-2-aminotoluene. (3) Middle red and bright red dyeings are similarly obtained by grounding with the 2<1>:5<1>-dimethoxyanilide and the 4<1>-anisidide respectively of 2 : 3-oxynaphthoic acid and developing with diazotized 3-bromo-5-chloro-2-aminotoluene, (4) The red dyestuff 3-chloro-5-bromo-2- aminotoluene. # the 4<1>-anisidide of 2:3-oxynaphthoic acid is produced in substance.
