Degumming silk.-Products of the nature of enzymes are obtained from the glands of the plagiostomi such as the sharks by removing grease from the gland, extracting the active matter, and drying it to produce a dry pulversible substance. The products obtained are suitable for use in tanning, in the un-gumming of silk by eliminating grit and sericin, and for the preparation of medicines. The glands treated are in particular those under the esophagus, the first intestinal gland, the genital glands of the male and the ovaries of the female fish, that of the cerebellum and those above the organs of evacuation. The grease may be removed by an organic solvent such as acetone and the residue dried in vacuo, or after removal of the grease the residue may be extracted with water and the extract precipitated with tannin, or the aqueous extract may be absorbed in infusorial earth or sawdust for drying purposes. In a further process the glands after removal of grease are extracted with chloroform, the extract precipitated by ether and the precipitate dried in vacuo. Albumen present in the aqueous extract may be precipitated by uranyl acetate. In a further method of extraction acidified absolute alcohol is employed, the resulting extract being precipitated by an alkaline substance and washed with a mixture of alcohol and ether the process being carried out in vacuo or without admission of air.
