Abstract
The naturally-occurring lactones contained in the costus root are isolated from costus root oil which has been extracted with petroleum ether (see Group III). The lactones are said to be thermolabile and converted to polymeric and/or decomposition products by other extraction processes. A lactone melting at 108 DEG C. crystallises out at room temperature and a further mixture of lactones may be obtained by mixing the residual oil with petroleum oil and cooling to between -15 DEG and -20 DEG C. The former is designated "costanolide" and has the formula: <FORM:0866809/IV (b)/1> and the mixture, designated "neo-costanilide" is a mixture of "costanolide" and dehydrocostus lactone of the formula: <FORM:0866809/IV (b)/2> together with traces of compounds of unknown structure.ALSO:Costus root oil is extracted by treating powdered costus roots with petroleum ether (40 DEG -60 DEG C.) at room temperature, separating the ether extract from the plant pulp by filtration, and removing the ether from the extracted oil under vacuum at a bath temperature of about 40 DEG C. Extraction by this method is said to avoid the polymerization or decomposition of thermolabile components of the oil, particularly lactones, and to permit their isolation (see Group IV(b)) in their natural form.
