Abstract
In making fish powder which, for example, is free from unpleasant odour and taste, fish is extracted with boiling ethyl alcohol. The extracted fish may be dried by sucking air through it and it may then be ground and sieved. The extraction may be performed in successive stages and the extracted fish may be dried between stages. The fish may be kneaded in the boiling alcohol and the liquid may then be removed, preferably under vacuum. Prior to the alcoholic extraction, the fish may be dehydrated by extraction with acetone, at 50 DEG C. in one or several stages. Ethyl alcohol or acetone may be distilled from the respective extracts and re-used. Water and oil in the remaining liquor may be separated by decantation. Extracts from the third and any following stages of alcoholic extraction may be used, as they are or fortified with alcohol, to extract fish.
