Abstract

A hypoglycemisant extract is obtained from edible mushrooms, preferably Psalliota campestris and Cantharellus cibarius, by a plurality of extractions using conventional extraction solvents such as methyl, ethyl or butyl alcohol, acetone, ether, water and chloroform. An example describes preparing an aqueous pulp of mushrooms which is then extracted with alcohol, the extract admixed with acetone and filtered, the resultant liquid being further extracted with ether and the ether extract removed and a further extraction made on the remaining part. The combined extracts are then concentrated by heating to 40-50 DEG C. under vacuum and the resulting residue extracted with alcoholic ether at least twice. These extracts are concentrated as before and their residue extracted with aqueous alcohol to give the final product. Other examples describe many variations of this process. The extracts may be mixed with insulin or sulphamides and conventional substances to form compositions for internal and external use.
