Abstract

1378278 Ginseng saponin PACIFIC CHEMICAL INDUSTRIAL CO Ltd 2 March 1973 10385/73 Heading C2U A chromophore-free total saponin extract is obtained from the leaves and/or flowers of ginseng (Panax Ginseng C. A. Meyer) by the steps of: (1) extracting the leaves or flowers with a C 1-2 alkanol, suitably at room or elevated temperature, optionally followed by removal of the alkanol by distillation; (2) treating the extract with a solvent mixture to extract the chlorophyll and other chromophores therefrom, said mixture being a non-solvent for the saponins, (e.g. benzene, chloroform or diethyl ether containing 1-10 wt. per cent of butanol, amyl alcohol or ethyl acetate); and separating the chromophore-containing extract; (3) adding to the residue a saponin solvent (e.g. butanol, amyl alcohol or ethyl acetate), optionally in admixture with water, in which case the aqueous layer is subsequently removed; (4) passing the resulting solution through an acidic alumina column; (5) removing the solvent from the eluate.
